YogaYogaOne of the oldest and most respected eastern traditions, yoga has in recent years become a much sought after escape from the stresses and strains of the modern world. If you plan to spend any length of time in Galway and are interested in this burgeoning discipline then you will be well catered for. Galway Yoga and Meditation CentreTobar na Bhfinn, Athenry, Co. GalwayThe Galway Yoga Centre was established in 1986 by Swami Shraddhamurti and Swami Chetanmurti. It is inspired by their teacher Swami Satyananda, one of the great yoga masters of our time. All the techniques that are taught here are from the ancient tantric teachings of Swami Satyananda. Swami Shraddhamurti is from Co Mayo, and Swami Chetanmurti is from Denmark. After undergoing a 2 year teacher training course with Guni Martin, one of Swami Satyananda's students in Denmark, they then started teaching in Copenhagen. When they moved over to Ireland they established Galway Yoga & Meditation Centre, and have since 1986 been running the Centre with daily classes and residential courses. Initially the teaching of Yoga was primarily in the centre in Galway City and the surrounding towns, but in 1990 land was acquired in the parish of Athenry and work started on renovating the existing buildings into a residential yoga centre. - This is an ongoing process.
